Stephen has a 20-year career history in operations and finance, working at a senior level in the public and private sectors, both in the UK and abroad. Stephen presided over the development and implementation of nationally recognised school business leadership professional standards and led the transition from the National Association of School Business Management to the Institute of School Business Leadership.

Stephen works closely with the Department for Education in areas of policy reform, and his commitment to research to aid our self-improving system includes ongoing engagement with international jurisdictions including Australia, Europe, the Middle East and the US.

Nickii Messer

A well known national and international conference speaker, author, and contributor to many educational publications, Nickii is keen to help school leaders at all levels develop the skills and confidence to embrace the complex challenges facing schools today.

With many years experience as a school business manager/director across three school phases, including seven years on the SLT of a leading edge secondary school, Nickii was instrumental in working with the National College to launch the SBM role and associated training programmes. In 2009, Nickii formed her company, All The Geese, to specialise in training, developing and promoting school business management and leadership.

Hayley Dunn

Hayley’s background is in accountancy and finance, having worked in the private and public sectors. She is a qualified accountant and has held senior business leadership roles in the maintained and academies sector, most recently as the finance director of a multi-academy trust.

She was one of the Institute of School Business Leadership’s (ISBL) CEO Award winners in 2017 and is the author of the recently published School Business Manager’s Handbook.

Cate Hart

Independent Consultant

Cate Hart has 18 years’ experience as an SBM/L, in 3 London schools as a member of the SLT and now as an independent consultant, was a Trustee of NASBM for 6 years, a life member since 2011.

She advised the DfE’s National Funding Formula committee, delivered training for Capita, NASBM, Optimus Education, EDEXCEL and the LA in all aspects of school business management and is a mentor for new SBMs. Particular expertise in forensic examination of school funding, maximising best value.

Previously, she worked for Nat West, the Dioceses of Winchester and Blackburn and taught music on a voluntary basis at her childrens’ school. Living now in Wales on a small holding, other interests include cycling, walking, shooting and enjoying her 6 grandchildren.
